Cocoa Mulch Alert

Over the weekend the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased
Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. They loved the way it
smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden.
Their dog Calypso, decided that the mulch smelled good enough to eat
and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was
typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any
way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning
walk. Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further
investigation on the companies web site, this product is HIGHLY toxic
to dogs.

Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that 'It is
true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa
Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on
each individual do g). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it.'

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and
other Garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called 'Theo
bromine'.

It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really
attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths
already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. J ust a word of caution check
what you are using in your gardens and be aware of what your gardeners
are using in your gardens.

Theo bromine is the ingredient that is used to make all chocolate
especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs.

Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine,
a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A
dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao
bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later.
Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells
revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

EXCELLENT JOB at the CPE Nationals!!!!!!!

You won't believe this, but Quincy and I absolutely ROCKED at the CPE
Nationals agility trial in Mason, MI last weekend.
Out of about 500 dogs competing, including about 100 from Ohio and 30
or so from his 20" Level C group, we:
- Took the "High in Trial" for Border Collies award (not sure how
many there were, but a bunch!)
- Took the "High in Ohio" award
- Took 2nd Place for all 20" dogs in the combined Games (Snooker,
Jumpers, etc.)
- Took 3rd Place in Jackpot 20" Level C
- And had a Perfect Weekend, going 9/9 Qualifying in all runs. We
were one of only 4 teams that managed this feat.

Not bad for a 5 year old Rescue boy! I'm so proud of him - what a fun
time we had.

Here we are at home the morning after, hope you can get the picture -
thought I had to share our wonderful moment.

Buckeye Border Collie Rescue (BBCR) is a non-profit organization that is run by volunteers. We are committed to the welfare of Border Collies in need in the Ohio area. The Border Collies are fostered in homes throughout the state of Ohio. The main co-ordination of the rescue group is conducted in Tiffin in northwest Ohio.

BBCR rescues Border Collies from shelters and accepts owner relinquishments if space permits. When possible with owner relinquishments, BBCR volunteers counsel the owners to keep the Border Collie in their home. Border Collie mixes are accepted as space allows. At times, a Border Collie mix is more appropriate for a responsible pet home where the intensity of a Border Collie is not appropriate.

BBCR updates vaccinations, tests and treats for heartworm and spays or neuters all Border Collies prior to placement. Border Collies are fostered in our homes and evaluated for social habits and activity levels. Applications are required to adopt a Border Collie from BBCR. Once the applicant is approved, the appropriate Border Collie is matched and a visit to the foster home is arranged. Adopted Border Collies are placed with a contract for a designated adoption donation.

BBCR is not a facility open to the public. The BCs are fostered in our homes. Appointments must be made in advance and only AFTER the application and approval process. Please go to the Available Dogs page and click Adopting a BC to see the process.

BBCR operates from donations, fundraisers and adoptions to help defray the costs of rescue. The time and some of the expenses for foster care, phone calls and transports is supported through the dedication of the volunteers. Most of the BBCR volunteers work full-time jobs and maintain a balanced household. Please keep this in mind when you begin the application process. The process may take a week or so to get underway. Please be patient.
